    ARTICLE

    Links, Links, and More Links.

    by Neal St. Clair

One of the most debated topics related to Internet Marketing among Internet professionals is what determines ranking results in Search Engines. While people may disagree about the importance of META Tags, Page Titles, Alt Texts, Keywords, (the list goes on and on), it seems today everyone agrees that reciprocal links are very important. The term "Link Popularity", created by Google, has brought linking to the forefront of Search Engine Rankings and several major search engines have followed suit. Link Popularity is a measure of the number and quality of links that are pointing to your website and websites that you are linking to. There is a direct connection between your link popularity and how high your site ranks in Search Engines.

In addition to improving search engine rankings, links can help your site receive targeted traffic. Not all links are equal, so I wanted to spend the rest of this article discussing how to set up an effective reciprocal link program for your website.

    1. Quality Over Quantity

    2. Let me start this section by saying that any link will help, but linking to sites that are relevant to your business and industry are much better. If you own a real estate company then you want to seek out websites that also serve the real estate industry. You may not want to link to competing sites, but with a little research, I am sure you can find hundreds or thousands of sites that compliment yours.

Finding sites that are relevant to your industry is the first step to setting up your link program, the second step is trying to get large sites in your industry to link to you. Search Engines like Google not only take in to consideration the number of sites linking to you, they also measure the traffic these linking sites are receiving.

You can find out how Google "ranks" every site on the web through the Google Toolbar. For more information on downloading and using the Google toolbar, please refer to the "Free Resource" section at the end of this newsletter.

    3. Add Your Site to Website Directories

    4. One of the easiest ways to improve your Link Popularity with high-quality links is to submit your website to Website Directories. Sites like DMOZ (www.dmoz.com) and JOEAnt.com (www.joeant.com) are human-edited directories that list websites by category. Search Engines give these links a lot of weight because they edited and maintained by real people.

    5. Make Sure Your Links Page is Connected to Your Homepage

    6. It is important that the page on your site where you list all reciprocal links is easily accessible from your homepage so Search Engines can easily find it. Search Engines will periodically visit your website to find updates and if they cannot find your links page, then you won‘t get credit for your links. If you have recently added a lot of links to your site, it never hurts to be proactive and submit your links page to Search Engines yourself.

Improving your site‘s link popularity should be an ongoing process for your site if you are serious about increasing targeted traffic to your website. You probably won‘t see results overnight, but it will pay off in the long run. A great way to measure your current link popularity and measure your progress is by using the Link Popularity tool at MarketLeap.com.

Each issue of the Internet Marketing Newsletter for Small Businesses will include helpful free online resources to promote your website.

  • Google ToolBar

  • Google is the top dog in the world of Search Engines and they now offer the Google Toolbar that can accompany your web browser when surfing the Internet. The best feature for webmasters and business owners is that the toolbar will tell you the Page Rank of every site your visit. Page Rank is Google‘ measure of a website that they use to rank pages in search results. This is a great indicator to help you find relevant links for your website.
