ARTICLE Making the most of your website: Email Auto-Responders This article is the second in the series, "Making the most of your website." In the last issue I discussed the benefits of online forms and how to implement them on your website. This issue will focus on Email Auto-Responders and how they will make your website more efficient. To begin, let's make sure we have a clear definition of what an email auto-responder is. An email auto-responder is code that automatically generates an email to a user of your site after they have visited a certain page on your website. I will illustrate exactly what an email auto-responder does through an example. Imagine a website that has an online guestbook where users can share feedback on the company's products. Users would fill out an online form providing their name, comments, and email address, and then click on a submit button to post their comments. Once they click submit, they are brought to a page that displays their comments. Behind the scenes, the page that display the user's comments would contain code that automatically sends that user an email thanking them for visiting the site and using the guestbook. It is important to point out before we go any further that email auto-responders won't work without the use of online forms. Without a form, you have no way to gather your user's email address. So now that we have an understanding of what email auto-responders are, let's discuss how they can improve your website and business. Communicating with your users is obviously important and something I think every business owner would like to do. Email is a great tool to accomplish that, but can be very time consuming if you have to write and send each email individually. It might not be to bad if you only have 5-10 people visiting your website a day, but think about managing that process if you had 100 people visiting your website each day. Email auto-responders do the work for you and allow you to quickly and easily communicate with all your website visitors. For the most part, people that visit your website are there because they have an interest in your products and/or services. If you provide multiple items or services, email auto-responders are a great way to promote all your offerings to potential customers. Let's say for example, that someone comes to your website and requests more information on product X by filling out your online form. After they complete the form, your email auto-responder can send them a message letting them know that you received their request for information and also let them know about your other products and services they may be interested in. There seems to be an infinite number of websites on the Internet today and this means people have numerous choices when deciding what websites to visit. It is tough to make your website stand out in the crowd, but email auto-responders can help by seamlessly communicating with your prospects. Not only did they get exposed to your business by visiting your website, but with email auto-responders on your website, the next time they check their email they will have a message from you as well.
