    The Importance of Link Popularity

To begin, let me provide a definition of Link Popularity. Link Popularity refers to the number of websites that are linking to your website and the number of websites that you link to. It is important to note that not only does the number of links count, but the quality of links is also very important. In the past, there has been debate about the importance of Link Popularity in Search Engine rankings, but some recent changes in the Search Engine World have increased its importance.

Two of the biggest Search Engines on the web, Yahoo! and Google produce more than 75% of all Search Engine generated traffic. Yahoo! has always used Google's listings to display search results in their directory but they would display their paid directory listings above the Google results. Recently, Yahoo! announced that Google listings would be displayed equally with Yahoo! listings on their search results page. This means that Google listings carry much more weight then they did a few months ago. This is great news for business owners and webmasters because getting your website listed in Google is still free.

So you may be saying this is good news, but what does it have to do with Link Popularity? Good question. Google has always placed a great deal of weight on Link Popularity and this is still true today. In fact, Link Popularity is the single most important ranking factor that Google uses to display search results.

Now, let's get to what is most important... Ways you can improve the Link Popularity of your website.

    1. Find out your website's current Link Popularity.

    2. Visit AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) and in the search form enter the following search term - "+link:www.yourURL.com -host:www.yourURL.com" This will tell you how many pages are linking to your website that are not part of your website.

    3. Research & create a list of relevant sites that you would like to share links with.

    4. Don't waste your time requesting links to low-quality websites because it is more important to have a few high-quality websites linking to your website. Spend your time creating relationships with quality websites that compliment your business.

    5. Set-up a "links" page on your website

    6. Not only is it a good idea to have a "links" page on your website for Link Popularity, it is a great way to generate traffic to your site. Link sharing is one of the oldest and most-proven method of maker ting your business on the Internet.

    7. Submit directory pages your website is listed on to Google

    8. If your website is listed in DMOZ, The Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.com) then submit that page to Google. DMOZ is a very important directory and the category your website is listed in should be very relevant to the content of your site. You can submit your website and other relevant pages to Google at the following URL - http://www.google.com/addurl.html

I hope this article sheds some light on the importance of Link Popularity and provides you with some ideas on ways to increase your websites ranking.
