Building Relationships With Your Website Visitors

    Neal St. Clair
    Founder, idesignbusiness

Many of the articles published in this newsletter focus on ways to promote your business online and bring more traffic to your website. For this issue, I wanted to talk about things you should be doing to turn those visitors into customers once they reach your website. Whether you have 10 people coming to your site a day or 1,000, these principles can be applied to your business.

To begin, consider the following example of the "offline world." A retail store‘s success is determined on the number of people that enter the store, how long they stay in the store, and how often they come back. Historically, sales increase the longer you can keep customers in the store and the more they come back. With this in mind, think about things retail stores do to get you in their doors and coming back... They offer coupons, free give-aways, contests, 0% financing, and I could go on and on. All of these things are focused on building relationships with the customer and creating brand loyalty.

The same principles can and should be applied to your website!

Unless you have a great product that is in great demand it is difficult to make a sale at first exposure. It is unlikely that a first-time visitor to your website is going to purchase from you right away so you must earn their business by providing superior service, proving your credibility and gaining their trust. The best way to achieve all of these things is by giving your visitors free information or a sample of your product in exchange for their email address or phone #. This is the first step to building a relationship and very important.

Once a website visitor has given you their contact information and permission to contact them you have gained two very important things; a qualified lead and the first step of a relationship.

Now that you have your visitors contact information, you must have a plan to communicate with them and bring them back to your site. The easiest and most affordable way to do this is through regular emails. Let your prospects know about upcoming events, specials, new products, company news, or anything that will be of interest to them. Make sure your emails are more than pure advertisements because they will get deleted and hurt your relationship instead of strengthening it.

Your primary goal with every email that goes out in the initial stage of relationship building should be to build credibility and earn your contacts trust. If you can do that and they are looking forward to receiving information from you, the sales will come.

Finally, a great way to get people excited about visiting your website is to keep your content fresh. Your content will obviously be unique based on your business, but a few ideas that apply to lots of industries include regularly updating pictures, provide free articles, offer advice, or add a message board to your site.

Remember your website is like a store, the longer people stay, the more likely they are to buy!

  • Google AdSense

  • Google recently introduced a new program for Webmasters and Business Owners called Google AdSense. You can serve Google Advertisements on your site and earn revenue for every clickthrough that comes from your site. What is really unique about Google‘s program is that they provide targeted ads for your website based on the content on your pages.

I think this is a great program and a really good way to increase clickthrough rates for banner ads. If you receive a good amount of traffic to your website and are looking for a way to make extra income then Google AdSense may be for you. Click below to sign up and learn more.
