    Keeping Your Website Current

    By Neal St. Clair

Creating a great looking and informative website for your business is the first step to developing your online presence. The great thing about having a website is the ability to update it easily and change information as necessary. How many of you have printed brochures or handouts for your business or products just to have the majority of them sit on a shelf somewhere a few months after they were printed because they have become out of date? Unfortunately, once your products evolve or information becomes dated that brochure is reduced to scrap paper and your investment is wasted. This is not the case with your website!

While a website can be dynamic and easily updated I still see so many that are nothing more than a "Brochure" online and never get updated. If that sounds like your site then it is time for a change and I am going to give you a couple ideas to get you started...

Why should you keep your website current?
This is very simple and should appeal to any business owner that has taken the steps to create a website in the first place! Fresh content and a current website will gain you new visitors, keep the old visitors coming back for more and help you sell more products and services.

    Online Articles
We have talked about the value of publishing an online newsletter in past issues of this newsletter. Creating, maintaining, and sending a newsletter to people by email can be a daunting task but at the very least you can write original articles and publish them on your website. Regardless of your industry you can publish information about your market and services... If you are operating a business in that industry you should have expert knowledge of the field and can share that via online articles.

    Links & Resources Page
It is important to create a links and/or resources page on your website for two reasons...One, it is fresh content that your visitors will appreciate, and two, it is great for the search engines and your link popularity. To make your links page valuable to your visitors make sure you add links that are relevant to your website and things they will value.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
The old saying is true and pictures are a great way to keep your website fresh. Photo galleries, product tours, and pictures of events your company are involved in are all things that can be easily added to your website.

    Latest News
Let people know what is going on with your company through a news section. News can be updated on a weekly, monthly, or even daily basis to keep your website current, informative and interesting. Once you start something like this make sure you stick to it because there is nothing worse than reading news from 2001!!!

I hope you can apply some of these ideas to your website. My goal was to keep them general enough so they will apply to any business that has a website.
